What is Plus Sizing?

Plus sizing of tires and wheels was originally designed to enhance performance but has become more of an appearance upgrade than a performance upgrade. Though appearance is now the primary factor in plus sizing, there is an increase in performance due to two key factors. First, as a result of the plus sizing conversion, the tire footprint is usually wider and provides a larger contact patch with the driving surface. Secondly, the lower aspect ratio causes a shorter sidewall and quicker steering response. The improved lateral stability and increased steering response improves overall performance of the vehicle. Air Pressure

Industry experts agree that proper air pressure is critical for proper performance of any tire. Lack of attention or failure to properly maintain air pressure can result in poor gas mileage, adversely affect vehicle handling and load carrying capacity as well as reduce tire life. Proper inflation has many economic advantages such as, longer tread life, fuel savings and better gas mileage as a result of lower rolling resistance compared to an under-inflated tire. A routine check of your vehicles air pressure and proper adjustment will save money and improve safety.


Where to Locate Air Pressure Information

door stickerTires lose air pressure each day, they can lose up to 2 lbs per month in cool climates and it's not uncommon for tires to lose air pressure at a higher rate in warmer conditions. It is therefore recommended that you check and properly adjust your tires air pressure monthly. There are several places where the correct air pressure may be found. The vehicle owner's manual or on the tire placard which is usually located on one of several locations on your vehicle, the drivers side door edge or door post, the glove compartment, or the fuel door. The placard will tell the maximum vehicle load, the cold tire pressure, and the size tire recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. If you have trouble, you may visit your local tire dealer or car dealer.


The Proper Way to Check Air Pressure

To check your tire pressure you must have an accurate air pressure gauge. Your investment in a quality air pressure gauge and its proper use is an investment in safety and better gas mileage. It is recommended that tire pressure be checked while tires are cold. Cold air pressure means that a tire has been driven LESS than one mile. A Visual inspection of the valve stem assembly is also recommended and valve stems should always be replaced when replacing your tires.


Tire Rotation

Periodic rotation of your tires is an important part of tire safety and longevity. Regular rotation will help insure uniform tread wear which promotes a smooth quiet ride and improves tread life. Most tire manufacturers recommend rotating tires every 6000 miles but it is wise to check your vehicles owner's manual for your vehicle manufacturer's recommendation.

Reading and Understanding Tire Sizes

The size of most passenger and light truck tires is represented by a combination of letters and numbers that can be found on the tire sidewall. The photograph below shows an example of a 205/60R16 92H passenger tire.

What Does it Mean?


205

This is the Section Width. It is the width of the tire from sidewall to sidewall, in millimeters. This tire is 205 millimeters wide.

60

This is the Aspect Ratio, and is the ratio of the sidewall height to the Section Width. The sidewall height of this tire is 60% of the Section Width, or 123 mm.

R

The "R" indicates that this tire is a radial. All TRAZANO tires are radials and built to the highest quality standards.

16

This is the Wheel Diameter that the tire fits, in inches. This tire will only fit a 16" wheel.

This is the nomenclature used to indicate the Load Carrying Capacity of the the tire. See the Load Index Chart for more information.

H

This is an alphanumeric indicator used to designate the maximum speed at which a properly installed and inflated tire may be driven. An H rated tire can be driven at speeds up to 130 mph. See the Speed Rating Chart page for more information.
